Assess washing and scrubbing resistance of paints
Erichsen Model 494 is used for the assessment of the washing and scrubbing resistance as well as cleanability of dispersion paints.
There are a few main standards of testing that can be applied.
DIN 53 778-2* (withdrawn, replaced by DIN EN ISO 11998) standard the dispersion paint is applied to a foil , dried and if specified contaminated. It is then scrubbed under wet conditions using a micro dosing pump with to-and-fro motions of the brush. After a pre determined set of cycles the specimen is examined to check if the contamination has been removed or if the coating has been scrubbed through to the substrate.
ASTM D 2486 standard the test paint is applied to a black plastic foil, dried and placed on a glass plate. A metal strip is then placed between the foil and the glass plate and the specimen fixed with a sealing frame. It is then scrubbed with a nylon brush and washing fluid until a continuous line can be seen in the area the metal strip was inserted.
DIN EN ISO 11998 standard the dispersion paint is applied to a plastic foil, dried and soiled. The abrasive pad is saturated with 4g of washing liquid and then pulled over the testing surface with 200 cycles. The cleanability is determined by visual comparison of the scrubbed area with the adjacent unscrubbed areas.
The tester is equipped with levelling feet and a cover plate on a steel trough with an integrated specimen clamping device. Powered by an electric motor a preset counter measures the cycles.
